Sounds like a stupid question right? Surely, any skin care product on a super market shelf is safe?
Most skin care and hygiene products are full of chemical cocktails. The fragrance industry alone can hide over 3,000 undisclosed chemicals under the name ‘Parfum’. Its not just the word for ‘smells nice’.
Most of these undisclosed chemicals are preservatives which can cause hormone imbalance issues, infertility and organ and nervous system damage. These chemicals can imitate estrogen and can feed the growth of cancer-causing tumours.
The average woman uses 12 personal care products a day each containing up to 40 synthetic chemicals per product entering your body.
So yeh, toxic skin care really is an issue right now!
Parabens are very commonly used preservatives as they prevent the growth of bacteria, moulds and yeast. The potential risks are skin irritation and the risks of hormone disruption. It has weak estrogen mimicking abilities which are thought to disrupt the natural order/ balance of hormones. It has been found in some breast cancer tumours.
Phenoxyethanol is considered "bad" primarily due to concerns over potential allergic reactions, its effects on the nervous system in infants, and its possible link to organ and endocrine issues.
Triclosan is a commonly used antimicrobial which can extend the shelf life of numerous products. It has been associated with a number of skin toxicities including skin irritation, contact allergic dermatitis and antibiotic resistance when used for prolonged periods of time and in high concentrations. It has been banned in some countries as an anti- microbial wash. As it broadly targets all bacteria including normal skin commensals, it is thought to affect the normal balance of microorganisms in the skin microbiome which can lead to exacerbation of inflammatory skin conditions.
Oxybenzone causes hormone disruption in humans, affecting estrogen production particularly in women and testosterone production in men as well as thyroid problems in both men and women.
If that’s not scary enough, there’s mounting concern that oxybenzone causes skin cancer according to research groups such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and other leading toxicology experts. Oxybenzone exposure increased women’s risk of other reproductive diseases, like endometriosis and breast cancer.
Parfum (or Fragrance) on a skincare label often acts as a catch-all term that can hide a mixture of potentially concerning chemicals, due to trade secret protections. This lack of transparency means consumers may be unknowingly exposed to ingredients linked to various health issues.
There are so many more you can research for yourself;
